First Half

Monologue: Rockets starting to find new identity

For months, the Rockets were defined by what they weren’t: a defensive juggernaut, not having a real shot at the Warriors anymore
The Rockets defense hasn’t been great to start the season due to the departures of some key members from last year’s team
Carmelo Anthony will no longer be playing for the Houston Rockets

Mike D’Antoni on bringing Melo to Houston and making him fit in (As told to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated):

“We tried to hit a home run and it didn’t work out”

Anthony was replaced in the rotation by Gary Clark, an undrafted rookie on a two-way contract
The Rockets went from starting at 1-5 to their sixth win in eight games

The Rockets are building on what they have instead of what they don’t

How confident should Rockets feel after blowing out Warriors?

The debut of Amin Elhassan’s…

“They’re starting to remember who they were. Now they’re getting their rhythm. Everybody understands their role. This is what we expected of them coming into the season. They’re going to be that team to give the Warriors problems” – Pierce

“They needed something to show that the struggles earlier in year were not a big deal” – Elhassan

“This is a confidence booster for them moving forward in the season because they know they have to deal with the Warriors at full strength, if they want to beat them” – Pierce

Latest episode of…

Bays of Our Lives.JPGStill consider Warriors a lock to win it all?

“They are going to win. They are a lock. Everything that happened this week has nothing to do with 2019. It has everything to do with 2020, 2021, 2022.” – Elhassan

“They’re a winning program. Winning cures a lot things that go on in the locker room. They need a little drama. They’re drama-free for the last 4 years” – Pierce

“It wasn’t even about the game. It was about them coming together” – Pierce

November 16, 2005 – Paul Pierce with the no look pass to Mark Blount!

Moving on…

Who are the real Spurs?

“Their offense has fallen off a cliff. A lot of has to do: They weren’t taking great shots” – Elhassan

“The aura around the Spurs isn’t the same. The core is completely gone. No Parker, no Ginobili, no Kawhi. There isn’t that feel anymore and teams are taking advantage of it” – Pierce

“They’re also dealing with injuries” – Elhassan

Clippers getting enough respect?

“They’re not getting respect from the media. Teams around the league know this is a really good team. If Danilo Gallinari can stay healthy and this team can stay healthy, they can be a playoff team” – Pierce

“GM Doc was so bad he made everybody forget how good Coach Doc was. Right now, Doc is at his best when he’s got a team of overachieving, blue-collar type players” – Elhassan

“Montrezl Harrell is the heart and soul of that team” – Pierce

Second Half

KD on Draymond: “Don’t ask me about that anymore” | Is KD the most powerful person in NBA? (By Brian Windhorst)

“I wouldn’t say the most powerful person. That’s still LeBron because he has the most influence on and off the court. When you about a guy who can tilt the balance of power, then yes, KD.” – Pierce

“What he does have is the most leverage because he can dramatically change the fortunes of another franchise like for instance, the New York Knicks” – Elhassan

Buy Jarrett Jack’s conspiracy theories?

“If this happens, LeBron is the most powerful guy in the NBA” – Pierce

“It ain’t going to happen” – Elhassan

“KD will be on the Lakers” – Pierce

“The AD part ain’t going to happen because the supermax is going to be on the table for him. He’s not passing up on that much money” – Elhassan

“AD has said: ‘I want to win in New Orleans. I want to make this work'” – Nichols

“He knows something big is coming up” – Pierce on Anthony Davis changing agents

Steve Kerr: Steph Curry is the “Short Tim Duncan” (Per Marcus Thompson of The Athletic) | How important is Steph Curry to Warriors chemistry?

“Steph smiles and shows emotions. He’s sort of like the mediator. He’s a leader. Everybody respects Steph” – Pierce

“With Steph, it is a different type of leadership. When the Warriors are at their best, they’re having fun. That joy comes from him” – Elhassan

November 16, 2007 – Kevin Durant with the game winning 3 pointer vs the Hawks!

It’s back!!!Dances with TWolves

Wolves Owner: “We wasted time persuading Butler to stay” (Per the Pioneer Press)
More of this topic can be read here

Should Wolves owner have forced Butler trade earlier?

“Everybody knew this. The way they handled it just didn’t go right. Some of this has to be put on him, on Thibs. You knew it was going to be toxic. They should have just handled it earlier before the season started and they wouldn’t be going through this right now” – Pierce

“Kevin Garnett has a lot of things to say about Glen Taylor and his ownership qualities. I’m on the same page with him. Something has to change (in the front office, on the sidelines)” – Pierce

Amin’s response…

Animated GIF-downsized_large(71).gif

Thibs fate already sealed with Wolves?

“It’s not a hot seat, it’s literally just an open flame under him right now. I just don’t understand why this is going to be the logic for anybody to move forward to hire anyone to do both jobs (Being Coach and President of Basketball Operations). It can’t be done” – Elhassan

“We have a good sample size of coaches who’ve done both jobs and hasn’t really worked out. Will Thibs do it? Probably not. He’s one of the more stubborn coaches in the league” – Pierce

Game of the Night
Jazz at Sixers (Butler’s Philly home debut)

“Jimmy is exactly what they need and as he continues to get acclimated to their system, he’s the perfect player for them. They need a guy down the stretch who can make big shots for them. I didn’t see that guy on this team last year. They struggled in close games” – Pierce

“It’s still early so he’s still trying to get acclimated” – Elhassan

RecommendsCan Celtics fix their broken offense? By ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry

How can Celtics fix offensive woes?

“They have to figure out ways to get easier baskets. For their athleticism, they should be one of the best teams on the break. Let these athletic forwards make plays” – Pierce

“With the talent they have, you need more possessions. Try to get to the (free throw) line when you’re struggling. Right now, they’re more of a half court team and shooting threes” – Pierce

“There’s too many cooks. You might have to break them up in terms of staggering minutes just so guys can have some ‘me time’ out there” – Elhassan

“We knew this was going to be a problem” – Nichols

Best landing spot for Melo?

“I agree with Tracy [McGrady]. It makes sense. Carmelo is a hall of fame player. I thought Houston was the best fit if he could have just understood his role, be more of a spot up shooter, rebounder” – Pierce on Melo retiring

“The Miami Heat because they have need a for a shot maker/taker and they can provide the other things: the rebounding, the hard work, guys around him. Also, get him into shape. That program, everyone is in” – Elhassan
